How wood weight is calculated
Weight is simply volume × density. We work out the board's volume from thickness × width × length, convert it to cubic feet, then multiply by the species' density in pounds per cubic foot. Density varies widely — western red cedar is about 23 lb/ft³ while ipe is around 69 lb/ft³, so the same board can weigh three times as much depending on the wood. The figures here are for air-dried lumber at roughly 12% moisture content; freshly cut "green" wood and pressure-treated stock weigh noticeably more until they dry.
How do you calculate the weight of a board?
Multiply its volume by the wood's density. This tool converts thickness × width × length to cubic feet and multiplies by the species density automatically.
Does moisture content matter?
Yes — green lumber can weigh 50–100% more than the air-dried figures shown here, and pressure-treated wood is heavier until it dries out.
