How board feet work

A board foot is 144 cubic inches of lumber — the volume of a piece 1" thick × 12" wide × 12" long. Hardwood is usually sold by the board foot, so this tells you how much material a project needs and what it will cost. Formula: (thickness × width × length in inches) ÷ 144, times quantity. Use the rough/nominal thickness you are billed for (e.g. 4/4 = 1").

What is a board foot?

A unit of lumber volume equal to 144 cubic inches — 1" thick, 12" wide, 12" long. Hardwood is typically priced per board foot.

How do you calculate board feet?

Multiply thickness × width × length (all in inches) and divide by 144. For length in feet, divide by 12 instead. Multiply by the number of boards.
